Chicago 2002
Well, everyone knows that Carol is a big Xena fan. She received
a postcard in the mail from About Face Theater in Chicago announcing that Xena,
Live! Episode II was playing. Of course, she had to see it. So we left
work early on a Friday and headed to the windy city. Somewhere in Indiana, we
decided to have dinner at Steak & Shake. BIG MISTAKE. Carol ordered a Turkey
melt and after a few bites she decided to look at it cause it tasted funny. The
meat looked awful so she told the waiter. He offered to get another but she
refused it. Yuck, nasty! Her appetite was ruined. Sarah on the other hand had
Ham Melt and hers was fine. On to Chicago. We stayed at the lovely Drake Hotel right off Michigan Avenue and within walking distance to Oak Street Beach, which we never visited. Had a drink in the Palm room after we checked in. There was a smooth jazz band playing. Nice and relaxing after a half day of traveling. Saturday morning we had breakfast at the hotel then caught a cab to the Sears Tower. We got there right at opening to avoid long lines. The day was beautiful so you could see for miles around. After we left there we walked - yes walked - to the Magnificent Mile and all the way back to the hotel. We did go into a few stores like Crate & Barrel, FAO Schwartz, The North Face and a few others. We stopped at a wonderful outdoor cafe located in front of the NBC building and had lunch. A celebrity was sitting at the table next to us, but we have no idea who she was, but she was getting lots of attention. I'd say she was from a daytime TV show. |

Carol's back was killing her after walking so much so she rested in the room awhile before it was time to leave for the Xena play. No way she was missing that. After all, that's what we did come for. We took a cab to the theater, picked up our tickets and waited to be seated. It's a small theater and you can sit anywhere and anywhere is close to the stage. The show was very good and funny. Same two actresses who played Xena & Gabrielle in 1999 also starred in this production. We saw the 5pm show so it was time for dinner after the show. We went to a Greek restaurant called Papagus. Very delightful |

On Sunday morning we walked to our favorite place to have breakfast - the West Egg Cafe. We were fortunate and didn't have to wait to be seated. It was already crowded and a lot more people came in behind us. Talk about good timing. It's a popular place so if you go, expect to wait for a table, but the food is worth the wait. We strolled back to the hotel, packed our bags and headed home. It was a nice little weekend getaway.
